Advance Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) is a name used to describe a number of different systems within a vehicle that are used to assist the driver and increase the safety of their journey.

The intention is to assist the driver and reduce human error in the task of driving. The systems that are put in place are designed to warn the driver of any potential danger, assist the driver in performing certain driving tasks, or intervene / take over control to avoid an impending collision.

These systems are not however designed to be relied upon and do not take over the task of driving. They are merely warning and assistance devices.

We evaluate these systems to familiarise ourselves with current and future technology.

Night Vision

Lane Change Assist is a system that is able to monitor the presence of vehicles in the adjacent lanes, warn the driver if changing lanes would be too dangerous and in some cases the vehicle can also autonomously complete the lane change itself.   Lane Departure Warning is a system wherein the vehicle will detect lane markings on the road ahead when driving using its on board camera and alert the driver when the vehicle crosses one of the lane markings (i.e. when the vehicle leaves the lane).   Lane Keep Assist is a system the applies a small amount of steering input to assist the driver in keeping the vehicle within the current lane.   Night vision is a system that uses a forward facing infrared camera to stream live video to a screen either on the infotainment system or instrument cluster. These types of cameras enable the driver to essentially see in the dark and is particularly useful when driving in poorly lit areas.

 Reversing Autonomous Emergency Braking (RAEB) works similarly to forward AEB in that the brakes of the vehicle are automatically applied when the system deems that there is an imminent collision.   Rear Cross Traffic Alert is a system that provides an alert to warn of approaching vehicles when manoeuvring in situations with poor visibility such as in parking scenarios.   Remote control parking is a feature that allows the driver to exit the vehicle and then park the vehicle using a remote control.
